ChatGPT Ruins A Marriage
A Dutch court annulled a couple’s marriage this week after their April 19, 2025 ceremony used ChatGPT-written vows that lacked required legal language. The judge ruled on January 5th that the artificial intelligence-generated speech failed to meet Dutch Civil Code requirements. Under article 1:67, couples must explicitly state “that they accept each other as husband and wife and that they will faithfully fulfill all duties which the law connects to their marital status.” Instead, the friend officiating asked if they would keep “supporting each other, teasing each other and embracing each other, even when life gets difficult” and called them “a crazy couple.” The court stated “the marriage certificate was erroneously recorded in the civil registry” and will remove it from city records despite the couple’s petition to preserve their original wedding date.
