Florida Doctor Indicted After Removing Patient’s Liver Instead Of Spleen

Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky was indicted on second-degree manslaughter charges this week for allegedly removing a patient’s liver instead of his spleen during August 2024 surgery. Bill Bryan, 70, of Alabama, died from “catastrophic blood loss” on the operating table at Ascension Sacred Heart Hospital Emerald Coast. Prosecutors say Shaknovsky continued operating despite Bryan going into cardiac arrest. An autopsy found Bryan’s spleen intact while his liver was missing. Shaknovsky’s medical licenses were suspended in Alabama, Florida, and New York following the incident. Court records allege two additional malpractice cases, including another patient death. Widow Beverly Bryan said “When I tell people what happened, it still sounds too awful to be true.” Shaknovsky settled a previous malpractice claim for $400,000 in 2024
