Multiple studies have shown that bad news can have a negative impact on mental health, but a recent University of Essex study of 1,800 participants has shown that the opposite can also be true.

When participants watched a negative news story followed by a positive one, they tended to feel more uplifted and optimistic than those who only saw the bad news.

Amusing stories helped to buffer the impact of bad news, but news stories featuring acts of kindness had a greater positive impact on mood. Performing an act of kindness yourself can also increase life satisfaction!
