Good news, bad news on the Turkey Day front:  The average Thanksgiving will cost a little less this year . . . dropping all the way down to the SECOND most-expensive Thanksgiving ever.

The American Farm Bureau Federation released its annual report on the cost of an average Thanksgiving meal for 10 people.  $61.17, down from $64.05 last year.

That’s $6.12 a head, a 4.5% decrease from 2022.  But it’s still 25% higher than it was pre-pandemic.  The Midwest has the most affordable Thanksgiving this year at $5.87 a person.  The Northeast is the most expensive at $6.44.

They base it on 12 Thanksgiving staples, but not everyone thinks they’re the BEST choices.  For example, they factor in sweet potatoes, not mashed potatoes.  But they’ve been using the same 12 foods since 1986.

Back then, Thanksgiving cost $2.87 a person.  But if you adjust for inflation, that’s over $8 in today’s money.  So, $6.12 isn’t really that bad.

As always, the most expensive item is the turkey, just over $27 for a 16-pound bird.  That’s down about 5% from last year.

The average person expects to gain EIGHT POUNDS over the holidays this year.  That’s up from 5.5 pounds in the same survey last year.  And 66% of people say they’re “postponing” being healthy until 2024.
