Three Foods You Should Skip During The ‘Diarrhea Parasite’ . . . and Three That Are Likely Safe

If you’re looking to reduce your chances of getting hit with the “diarrhea parasite” that’s been going around, here are a few foods you might want to stay away from . . . and also a few that are probably safe to eat . . .

1.  Bagged lettuce and salad kits.  Some officials believe that the source of the parasite could be lettuce.  And it could be introduced in facilities where the lettuce is processed and packaged.

2.  Berries. Previous outbreaks of cyclosporiasis have been caused by berries, specifically raspberries . . . possibly because it’s hard to scrub a raspberry clean. And rinsing fruit likely isn’t enough to get rid of the parasite anyway.

3.  Fresh herbs. Basil and cilantro have been culprits in past outbreaks, so it makes sense to be cautious of them for now.

Some fruits and veggies that MIGHT be okay include:  Bananas . . . whole, unpeeled melons . . . avocados . . . canned or frozen fruits and vegetables . . . and cooked fruits and vegetables.  Foods that are heated to about 158 degrees Fahrenheit should kill off the cyclospora parasite.
