In The Know with Gino…

Last week, the Chattanooga Police Department’s K9 Unit made a resounding mark at the recent tri-state competition, showcasing their skill, dedication, and teamwork. Among the standout performers was K9 Sully, who earned the coveted title of “Top Dog” in narcotics detection and secured a spot at the upcoming national championships in Texas.

The multi-day event brought together nearly 40 K9 teams from Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee, testing their expertise in narcotics detection, criminal apprehension, article search, and obedience. Chattanooga’s K9 teams not only competed fiercely but also emerged as some of the top contenders, earning a total of seven awards and certifications.

Ofc. David Gerity and K9 Sully shined brightest, clinching first place in Criminal Apprehension and Narcotics Detection (Room Search), as well as overall top honors in Narcotics Detection. Their outstanding performance earned them the “Top Dog” title and secured their qualification for the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) National Police Dog Field Trials in Abilene, Texas this September.

Joining the celebration were MPO Lucas Timmons and K9 Burt, who earned second place in Narcotics Detection (Room Search), and Ofc. Frisco Sherrill and K9 Tatonka, who achieved certification in their very first USPCA trial—a promising start for the newest members of the team.

The competition also honored the memory of K9 Diesel, who sacrificed his life in the line of duty in September 2025. MPO Paul Winkelman was awarded the Medal of Valor for dedicated service, a heartfelt tribute to Diesel’s loyalty and sacrifice.

The USPCA, the nation’s oldest and largest police K9 organization, certifies teams in patrol and narcotics detection, setting high standards that CPD’s K9 teams consistently meet. These certifications not only affirm their proficiency but also guarantee their ability to operate safely and effectively in the field.

From seasoned veterans to new recruits, the Chattanooga Police Department’s K9 unit continues to exemplify excellence and dedication. As they prepare for the national competition, their top-tier skills and unwavering commitment reaffirm why they are truly top dogs—and why the community can always count on them.
