Researchers from the U.K., Italy, and the United States tracked 122 participants to see how ambient light impacted sleep. Scientists found that blocking light, like with a face mask, improved alertness when participants were awake.

For the study, a group of 89 adults were asked to spend a week sleeping with an eye mask, and one week without it. In another experiment, 33 adults wore the eye mask and a headband to measure brain activity.

Both tests showed cognitive benefits related to wearing the mask.

“Wearing an eye mask during sleep is an effective, economical, and non-invasive behavior that could benefit cognitive function and lead to measurable impacts on everyday life,” study authors wrote.
